Important Safety Information about NuvaRingRx

NuvaRing is a vaginal ring containing female sex hormones. It is easy to insert this ring to prevent a pregnancy. Keep the product inserted for three weeks and remove it in the 4th week for complete protection against conception. It is as effective as the shot, skin patch, pill, and other hormonal contraceptive if you use it as recommended by your healthcare provider. Most women do not experience any discomfort or even feel that the Vaginal ring contraceptive is in place once inside. Below, we have discussed some safety information about the do’s and don’ts, things to keep in mind, etc. for efficient use of this product:

Risk of Certain Medical Conditions

There is a slight risk of serious side effects such as stroke, blood clots, and heart disease on using NuvaRing Birth Control. The contraceptive is otherwise safe. However, caution is recommended in women with a history of medical conditions. This makes the risk of getting stroke, heart attack, and blood clots more likely. For instance, the chance of blood clot formation is greater with the kind of progestin used in vaginal birth control ring compared to other progestins found in some low-dose birth control medications. Just so that you take the required precautions, it is also important to know that the risk of blood clots is the highest if you begin using the hormonal methods for birth control and stop using it after a month or more, only to restart the pregnancy prevention with the same or different hormonal contraceptive.

35 Years of Age and Smoking

If you are over 35 years of age and smoke cigarettes, do not use vaginal ring for birth control. The reason behind this is that smoking escalates the risk of severe blood vessels and cardiovascular problems, especially if you also use hormonal birth control methods. It may further increase the possibility of blood clots and heart attack, proving to be life-threatening. Also, the risk keeps on getting worse as your age increases and so does the number of cigarettes you smoke.

Common Side Effects

The common NuvaRing side effects are irritation inside the cervix and around or in the vagina. You may at times encounter vaginal discharge, mood changes, acne, abdominal pain, low libido, painful menstrual periods, depression, vaginal discomfort, migraine, headache, breast tenderness/discomfort/pain, weight gain, nausea, or vomiting. However, these side effects do not affect all. It may occur especially for new users and should fade with continuous use over months.

Not For Protection Against STIs and STDs

Remember that Contraception NuvaRing is a birth control product. While it safeguards from the possibility of conceiving, it does not shield you against the risk of sexually transmitted infections and HIV or AIDS. You must always take caution to defend yourself from STIs and STDs by practicing protected intercourse methods and safe intercourse behaviors for this purpose rather than relying on a birth control ring.
