How To Use Nuvaring

NuvaRing Birth Control contains etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol to prevent a pregnancy from taking place. You need to use this product in a 4-week cycle by keeping the vaginal contraceptive ring inserted for 21 days or 3 weeks. After this, remove the ring for 7 days and in this duration, you may experience menstrual period or withdrawal bleeding. On the 8th day, you can insert a new NuvaRing, and continue using the contraceptive this way to stay free of a pregnancy.

You should not be taking any other hormonal birth control when on Contraception NuvaRing. Some people may use emergency contraceptive Plan B and Nuvaring simultaneously, which is not required if you use the vaginal ring properly. Things to Consider Before Using Birth Control Ring

Here are some things to keep in mind before you start using the - The Contraceptive Ring:

  • If you are using the Vaginal ring contraceptive on the first day of your menstrual period, you need not depend on any other contraceptive method like a condom. The protection against a pregnancy begins immediately. Or, you can start with the birth control vaginal ring on day 2 or 5 of the menstrual cycle beginning. Here, you need to use a spermicide or condom for the initial 7 days.
  • If you are switching to a vaginal ring from a birth control patch or pill, you can start any day only if you have followed the necessary dosage guidelines and missed the use of previous contraception. If changing from a minipill, injection, or intrauterine device on the next day of stopping these birth control methods. Follow the use of a spermicide or condom then for the next 7 days along with NuvaRing.
  • If using the contraceptive ring after a miscarriage or abortion, begin with it 5 days after the first-trimester pregnancy termination (up to 12 weeks of the pregnancy). There may be no need to depend on any other contraceptive method like a condom in this case. However, if you begin with NuvaRing after 5 days, you will require a spermicide or condom
  • If you underwent a second-trimester abortion, which occurs after the initial 12 weeks of conception or, after childbirth, only begin with a vaginal ring for birth control after 28 days (4 weeks) have passed. Use a condom or spermicide for the first 7 days. Do not breastfeed when on the vaginal ring product.

How to Insert a NuvaRing in the Vagina?

Now that you understand the circumstances of when to start using NuvaRing, here are details of how to place a Nuvaring inside your vagina safely:

  • You must choose a position comfortable to you such as standing with a leg up, squatting, or lying down. Remove the NuvaRing from its pouch. Do not throw the foil as it is re-sealable and helpful when disposing of the birth control ring. Wash your hands beforehand.
  • Hold the birth control ring in between the thumb and index finger. Prepare for insertion by pressing the sides of the NuvaRing together and gently slipping the folded ring inside the vagina. You can even use the applicatory available separately, to put the product in the vagina.
  • Remember, the contraception vaginal ring does not have to be in a certain position inside you for it to begin working. Even if the contraceptive moves from its position sometimes in the vagina, do not get conscious or worried. You may not even feel the contraceptive ring inside you, even during intercourse.
  • Do not push NuvaRing too deep in the vagina or it can feel uncomfortable or go far enough. If you force the vaginal ring to go inside deeper. Also, remove the ring on time or it can cause infection, and stop being effective as it has a timeline of 4 weeks until it can stop you from getting pregnant. After this, if you want to defend yourself from conceiving, you need to use a new NuvaRing.
  • If you cannot find NuvaRing in the vagina and encounter pain after or during the placing of the contraceptive vaginal ring, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Though NuvaRing does not slip out just like that, it works as a precaution to check if the product is inside you after or before intercourse.
  • When removing the pestrogen ring after 4 weeks, get into the position as described during the product’s insertion. Use your index finger to go into the vagina and gently pull the vaginal ring out by hooking it. Pull the Vaginal ring contraceptive forward and downward and place it back in its original foil. Seal the opening and dispose of it in a trash can. Do not flush NuvaRing in the toilet. Always keep it out of reach of pets and children.
